| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2024 | 45 Racquet Club Great news! OHCC Realtor Patti Smith will be our sponsor for 2024! Among the die-hard 8 am pickleball regulars, the past few months have required some ingenuity to figure out how many layers you can wear to stay warm and still be able to get your serve in and scoop up a dink. But then there are "those guys" who wouldn't wear long pants to the courts in a blizzard. With the San Diego version of wintery weather hopefully behind us, action at the courts is picking up speed as spring approaches. How glad are we! Pickleball popularity continues to grow, and we know that many of you have children, grandkids, and friends who play. Your visitors are welcome to use the courts (any of our courts), but you must be with them at all times - playing or just watching. You can't just drop them off and leave. Those are HOA rules, and there are a few more. Please contact the Racquet Club Help Desk in advance of their arrival to learn more. You'll be glad you did. Bill McGrath is making good progress expanding paddle tennis numbers. Thirty-six showed up for a January Open House, many of them former tennis players thinking the smaller court could work better for them these days. Bill followed up with some small group skill sessions and encouraged the formation of private practice games. That's allowed us to add a second weekly drop-in session on Thursdays for paddle tennis. Check it out if this sounds interesting – the group is always happy to share a paddle and show newbies the ropes. A tennis mixer is scheduled for March 15 from 2 to 4 pm to get more of you out to use our beautiful, but too often empty, tennis courts. Bill McGrath is behind this as well… and when Greg and Cindy Smith return from their winter home in the desert, there will more activities. 2024 pickleball tournaments for club members: Dinking Competition – March 14; Men's – April 18; Women's - June 6; and Mixed Doubles – Sept. 26. If you've thought about it but haven't yet done so… join the Racquet Club…just for the fun of it! Play or don't play, we are very much a "social" club.
