14 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2024 | e Joy of Line Dancing Do you like music? Do you enjoy learning new skills that keep your brain engaged while participating in invigorating exercise? Think dancing… specifically, line dancing! While its origins are born of cultural folk dances brought to America by European settlers, ultimately, they were developed into American country dances that featured the regional songs and musical instruments favored by local communities. In the 1970s country dancing saw the meteoric rise of line dancing… a true American phenomenon that now features music of ALL genres from the '70s to today – including pop, Latin, country, Big Band and oldies. One of the best things about line dancing is that it is done alone and doesn't require a partner, so you are free to learn and enjoy at your own pace without the fear of tripping up your partner! Danced in lines, the steps are choreographed and taught here at OHCC by Christine Alesiani, a skilled instructor who keeps current on all the most popular new routines. She makes her classes easy to follow, fun, entertaining, and energizing. So, if you want to keep your physical self and mental acuity in the peak of health come dance with us at any or all of these classes. Regular Line dance class schedule: Beginner (1): Tuesday, 10:30 – 11:30, $5 Improver (2): Monday, 12:30 – 2, $7 Intermediate (3): Tuesday, 12 – 1:30, $10 Want to try it out? Come on by. You do not have to be a Line Dance Club member; however you will be expected to pay for the class, which pays the instructor. After a trial, you will need to join the club. New for 2024? Dues have been reduced to $5/year. If you are interested in participating in our activities and are not sure who to reach out to for further information, please call Sunny Griffin (970) 708-0443. Also, please visit our website. ~ Anne Sage Line Dancers On Jan. 27, the Doo Wop and Disco Dance Club which features music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, held a "Meet & Greet" event at Abravanel Hall. It was attended by a record 185 enthusiastic members out of our almost 500 active members. There was delicious pizza, assorted libations and camaraderie as the new Board of Directors announced plans and gave input for the coming 10 dance events for 2024. The Board would especially like to give a big shout out thanks to Patty and Greg Coffey (pictured here with Club President, Tom Harwood) for their dedicated help in picking up pizza and serving it to our members for so many years! So, there's still time to join "The Fun Club" for only $10 dues. Membership forms are at the clubhouse or downloaded on the OHCC website. Hope to see you on the dance floor! Written by Sue Silva, Director of Club Events Doo Wop & Disco Dance Village Squares Village Squares got off to a good start with several new people joining the club and showing up for the first lessons. Our caller, Mike Haworth has started a system where several basic calls are taught or reviewed each time, then a new series is introduced and only the basic and the new calls taught that evening are used. So, everyone is dancing right away, which is fun for everyone. The experienced dancers are coming to help the new dancers, and as students stay with the class, they will learn more calls and advance steadily. There is time set aside at the end of each class lesson for the experienced dancers to enjoy dancing at an advanced level. On the fourth Wednesday of each month, it is just dancing without instruction, unless some call seems to require more explanation. On that night, dancers are encouraged to wear black and white, and it feels more like a party! Come enjoy the expert calling and the friendly people at Wednesday night square dances, an ongoing club since 1985! Written by Valerie ompson
