| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2024 | 29 Art Lovers Do Dues Day was very successful as we had 28 renewals and 22 new members, for a total of 50 members for the day. An OHCC resident remarked to us that many people handed their checks in at the Front Desk to avoid the crowds and possibility of infection. Thanks to President, Susan Pick and Membership Chairperson, Ronnie Duberstein for welcoming all who visited the Art Lovers Club's table and to Estee, Staff Member who checked several times to see if they needed anything. One of our favorite meetings is Members' Treasures where our members bring an art item that is especially meaningful to them. Our January meeting was no exception as there were so many spectacular and interesting presentations. Carol and Barry Farrell showed us a beautiful piece of "Carnival Glass," a dark purple punch bowl and a detachable stand which were adorned with grapes and vines. Carnival Glass was first produced at the Fenton Art Glass Company in Williamstown, West Virginia. Introduced in 1908 it continued to be popular into the 1920s. Because it was inexpensive to make, it was given away as prizes at carnivals and was often called "the poor man's Tiffany." Jeff Powell brought several of his own creations, abstract paintings and photographs all on 15" x 15" canvases. Selma Leighton showed us some of her favorite art, one by Robert Miles Parker who was considered a "Historical Preservationist" who painted old buildings including the one where her restaurant was located in NY. She included a lithograph by Ukranian artist Louis Lozawick. Linda Rios displayed lithographs and jewelry pieces by Erté, French artist and designer of jewelry, fashion and costumes in the Art Deco style. Karen Alexander brought in a beautiful Moroccan tray as well as two very colorful paintings. One is called "San Francisco" and the other "Angels and Dragons." A copy of her tea set was seen in the "Barbie" movie. Jackie Cameron brought her tea set which was her grandmother's. Susie Anson showed us a very colorful primitive painting that she acquired in Havana, Cuba. A trip to Beyond Van Gogh, The Immersive Experience will be followed in March by viewing Beyond Monet, An Immersive Experience. Both shows are shown at the Wyland Center at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Written by Rita Montjoy As of March 19, we will officially welcome spring, the season with more hours of sunshine, special holy days, an opportunity to participate in more clubs and outdoor activities and more time to spend with friends. We are so fortunate to live in Southern California with our great climate, amid the caring community of OHCC. We are also grateful for our talented artists who are happy to share their beautiful art works with us in the Art Studio. Please be sure to see the watercolors currently on display! There are more and smaller paintings than we usually feature, loosely grouped by subject matter featuring animals, sea life, flowers and elegant frames. Thanks to Cindi DeWeese, Shellie Bean, Charlene Brisson, Bob Jones, Sarah Kolb, Barbara Miller, Colleen Moskal, Kathy LeVeck, Kim Murray, Lorraine Kleeman and Tatis Cervantes Aiken for participating in the display! If you would like to show your artistic endeavors, perhaps in our April 6th exhibit, please contact Judy Harris or Lainy Vinikow.
