44 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2024 | About 100 wellness-minded residents attended the Swim & Wellness Club's January meeting. Kim Marquardt, MSN, RN, PHN, shared information in a presentation entitled "Processed Food-The Demise of a Nation's Health". We learned about grains, and how they affect our gut biome. Many people consider avoiding gluten and wheat to be a fad. But the wheat and wheat flour that we grew up with are vastly different from what is now grown. Wheat of the 2020s is genetically modified, spikes blood sugar and insulin worse than sugar and increases belly fat! U.S. grain crops are also sprayed several times with Round-up. Kim also shared interesting facts about oil, which is in virtually every processed food. Seed oils like corn, canola, sunflower, safflower, peanut and grape seed, as well as margarine, all contain linoleic acid. This Omega 6 fatty acid is the compound in the body responsible for inflammation. And inflammation is at the core of many modern chronic illnesses, such as allergies, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune issues, irritable bowel syndrome and neurological issues. Kim pointed out that much of her information challenges mainstream dogma and beliefs about nutrition. She encourages people to seek out their own information, learn to question everything, especially mainstream information, and don't assume that "experts" are right. Our next meeting will be on Wed., March 13 at 1:30 pm on Palm Court. Our speaker will be club member Patti Waterman. Patti is a lifelong swimmer who qualified for the Olympics at age 17! She went on to swim at SDSU, where she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She taught Health and Kinesiology at the college level for 35 years, in addition to being the women's swim coach. Patti's talk will help us learn what constitutes a well-balanced healthy life. Patti will share the 6 areas that we need to keep in balance, along with simple things that we can do daily, weekly and monthly. This is a members-only meeting. Not a Swim & Wellness member? You can join the club anytime for just $10. Drop off a check made out to the OHCC Swim & Wellness Club at the clubhouse. Be sure to include name, address, phone and email. Written by Carol Farrell Senior Fitness Club Calorie Free Happy Hour! If you are interested in improving strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, and overall body conditioning, then you may want to consider attending an aerobics class to see if it fits your needs. This is an all standing low impact class… NO JUMPING! The instructor leads each class in a warm up session followed by the aerobic portion, and then she does a cool down. Light weights are used for the last 10 minutes of the class. Occasionally there are a few exercises for balance and an easy dance for fun. Classes are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in Abravanel Hall from 10 to 11 am with instructor Christine Alesiani. You can choose the number of classes each week that you would like to attend. (There is no class available on the second Wednesday of each month.) The cost is $5 per class paid directly to the instructor. You may pay for and try two classes without joining the club. The annual club dues are $6 (please make the check payable to OH Aerobics). ~ Written by Margie Raisigel Aerobics
