In the past, particularly the Victorian
age, notions of kindness, especially
female kindness, were lauded, admired
and respected. Kind women were
regarded as prestigious, and being
kind was a virtue all girls should
aim for. Today, kindness has a more
understated and complicated role
in what it means to be a woman.
Girls are encouraged to be 'strong',
'rebel women', 'difficult', 'daring' and
'different'. Kindness is seen as passive
and submissive. is is unfair. Being
kind is a strength, and no woman, in
fact no person, should be embarrassed
to be kind.
Being kind does not preclude
bravery, strength or rebelliousness; it
complements them. To be kind today
is to be truly badass and brave.
