| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2024 | 59 In a recent article in Inc. magazine, writer Maya Hu-Chan shares advice she gives clients on handling major life-changes. This "life-coach" reflects on transitioning to a productive retirement, emphasizing possibilities. Where should they look? "One word: pickleball." We are intrigued. Maya elaborates: "I believe there are four main reasons why the sport is particularly popular with this age group. One, it's active. It keeps players motivated to move, without imposing too much physical strain. Two, it's doable. It's accessible, inexpensive to play, and easy to learn. Three, it's social. It brings people together and has built-in interactivity. And, finally, it's fun. (If you've played pickleball, you know.)" Yes, Maya, we know. And, she goes on to say that all folks entering this new season of life are now "all part of the pickleball generation." And, no, she doesn't advise that pickleball be the end-all and be-all of retirement. But she finds the sport to be an apt metaphor for the elements of a post-employment lifestyle: "The next step should be a rewarding one, an opportunity to embrace being active, being social, finding fulfillment, and having fun." She promises in future columns to explain the importance of incorporating the above four elements. Sun Lakers who have discovered pickleball are indeed benefiting from these characteristics attributed to the game. It gets us up and moving. It impels us out to be among friendly neighbors. It connects us. And, hopefully, as we launch into the more important pursuits of our day, we bring a vigor that we wouldn't have without a brisk work- out that includes more joking and laughter than we might find on the treadmill in the gym. Pickleball isn't for everyone. It requires a fair degree of mobility. Any background in racquet sports is a big help, but not required. If you are looking for a fun way to spend a couple of hours, our club vice-president, Judy Luna, can help steer you. Come out and see what Ms. Hu-Chan is talking about. You can reach Judy at (949) 929-2390. We can lend a paddle while you decide if pickle is for you. Wear shoes made for tennis, not jogging. See you on the courts! Pickleball Club
