PAWS
We have struggled with separation
anxiety with our boy Rex as I am sure some
of you have. I have found some interesting
statistics:
• 47 percent of Americans report feeling
anxious when away from their pets.
AZ, NY and VA have the most anxious
pet parents.
• 76 percent of dogs experience
separation anxiety.
• The average pet parent is willing to
part with their dogs for a max of nine
days when traveling. (Five days is
Rex's max.)
• 73 percent of Americans would get
another dog if it would make their
resident dog less anxious. (Didn't
work in our house.)
• 82 percent of Colorado dogs have
separation anxiety.
• 38 percent of American pet parents
believe their dog is more important
than their significant other.
• 70 percent would break up with
someone who doesn't allow their dog
around as much as they want.
• 69 percent would prefer to work from
home for the sake of their dog.
• 41 percent have canceled plans
because they couldn't bring their dog.
Common Behaviors - over 50 percent
excessive barking or howling, 24 percent
going to the bathroom indoors, 23 percent
destroying objects (16 percent chewing
shoes, 14 percent chewing furniture).
But we love them and do the best we can.
When an 80 pound mammal licks your tears
away and then tries to sit on your lap, it's
hard to be mad, after he has chewed a chair,
dumped over the trash can and left you a
surprise that you almost stepped in.
