Thank you to those of you who attended Solera's 2nd Annual celebration of Black History Month on Feb. 23 in Oakmont's Great Room. We shared stories of those who attended the celebration and honored Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the father of Black History Month. Bagels and donuts were served along with coffee and water. Stay tuned for news of our next get-together. ~ Willie Hill, Acting Chairperson FINALE … I want to thank those of you who have read some or all of my previous 82 articles on ancestry and building your family trees. I hope the information provided has been interesting, informative, and useful in your learning about ancestry matters and building your family tree. However, it is time for me to put my pen to rest. So, I want to leave you with some helpful tips for building and populating your family tree. There are literally thousands of databases both online and in reference materials that can possibly be of help to you. Two are my favorites to use; Familysearch.org and Ancestry.com. They contain names and information on literally billions of people plus they have the framework to start and build a family tree available to users. There is another source that sums up much of the sites and databases that someone may need when populating your family tree and that is a publication with the title "How to Do Everything – Genealogy" (4th edition by George G. Morgan. It offers a huge variety of information on databases and is most helpful in giving you alternative sites to visit when you hit that inevitable "Brick Wall" when building your family tree. If you are truly serious in your genealogy efforts, I strongly suggest that you get a subscription to Family Tree magazine. It is continuously giving information on data sources, interesting tidbits on famous people in trees, and just interesting articles on other genealogy topics. And let's not forget the information standby, "Google." It can provide information on a person both current and historical and possibly give you directions to follow on filling out your family tree. Wikipedia is also a good source to provide information on particularly older, famous, or historic individuals. I hope you continue your treasure hunt to find those nuggets to populate and grow your family tree. I just hope the information here and in my previous articles has helped you along the way. Happy treasure hunting … Take care! ~ Bill Cramsie ANCESTRY GROUP ORIGINS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: As suggested in the charts below, the origin of the English language reflects the history of Europe. Richard Crowe will present this interesting topic at the next meeting of the Solera History Group, April 1, 4:30 – 5:30 in Oakmont Rooms 1 and 2 – no fooling!
