April knows her own and is content." - Susan Coolidge (Sarah Chauncey Woolsey) As a young child growing up in Northern Minnesota, Easter was usually celebrated in April. Each year, children were dressed in their finest clothes — white patent-leather shoes with lacy ruffled socks, white gloves, and hats adorned with the finest of spring flowers. It marked the beginning of spring. One never wore this coveted outfit prior to that day. It mattered not that it could be 25 degrees below zero with snow. It was required, a right of passage. It was April! The month is known for one of the most fun days of the year, April Fools Day. It began in France where folks would place a paper fish on someone's back without them knowing. Charles Schultz invented a 'Peanuts' character called April Fool. She played jokes on innocent folks. April is also known for the arrival of the Easter Bunny and chocolate eggs left hidden on lawns. The month of April celebrates National Library Day on the 6th, International Earth Day on the 22nd, the beginning of the professional baseball season, and the birth of the Ford Mustang in April 1964 - total cost $2,368. Here at OHCC, we will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of our beloved community. In keeping with this celebration, our library will host "The Afternoon with Authors Series" on May 5. Four resident authors will hold a Round Table Discussion that will include their books, the inspiration for writing them, the processes used, the challenges faced, and their successes. Dee Wardell, author of Naomi's Place and Stan Katz, author of e Emperor and the Spy will be two of the presenters. This presentation is free to all residents, but you MUST sign up at the front desk beginning April 1st. The Authors' books will be for sale at the event (cash or check only). Don't miss this great opportunity to support our very own resident authors. For those of you who have followed the antics of Fergus O'Leary, the Leprechaun who took up residence in our library across the last two years, he wants you to know that he has left for Ireland to escape the rain.
