26 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2024 | This is a great year to be a member of the Choral Society. It seems like at every rehearsal we have more new members. If you are interested in joining now would be the time because a little bit later down the road, you wouldn't have enough time to learn the music. It is challenging music, but it's great fun to sing. Our director makes it easier to learn with online practice recordings which allows you to practice before rehearsal to get down the notes and timing of the various pieces. For someone like me who doesn't read music, it is a true blessing. Concert time is approaching, seemingly at lightning speed. The Spring Concert is on May 19 in Abravanel Hall at 2 pm. Also coming up is the Summer Concert that we provide for the community. The date and time for that will be July 6 at 6 pm. Once again, it will be in Abravanel Hall. The concert will be featuring Dr. Michael Munson who is an outstanding pianist and our accompanist for the last few of our Choral Society Concerts. Dr. Michael D. Munson earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music from the Eastman School of Music in 1992. Since 1994, he has been working at Palomar College when he started accompanying ballet classes, which he still does. Currently, he teaches applied piano, plays for ballet, and accompanies the Palomar Chorale. He has taught beginning piano, music theory, and organ. He also accompanies and coaches' students in the music program at Mira Costa College. Dr. Munson is also the organist of the First United Methodist Church of Escondido, a Life Member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and a former Dean of the Palomar Chapter of the AGO. He has concertized in Southern California, the eastern United States, and Europe. He has also given three concerts at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion as part of the weekly Sunday Concert Series there. This will be an event you certainly do not want to miss. Written by: Jack Shabel Choral Society OHSPA Hello OHCC! For those of you who do not know or are new to our community, OHSPA is not a club, but a 501(c)(3) organization approved by the State of California. Our mission is to promote the appreciation of the performing arts; hence, our name – Ocean Hills Society for the Performing Arts (OHSPA). We were very excited to receive so many rave reviews after our Bachelors of Broadway show, which came to OHCC direct from New York City. The OHSPA Board is diligently working on our next show - Supreme Reflections – A Loving Tribute to Diana Ross and the Supremes on May 4! The show features three professional female singers paying tribute to the most famous female singing group of all time. You'll hear such hits as Come See About Me, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Where Did Our Love Go, and more. Tickets for the Supreme Reflections go on sale on Tues., April 2, in Abravanel Hall at 8:30 am. Tickets are $30 each. Tickets will also be on sale at the Concierge Desk on April 2-5, from 10 am to 2 pm. At other times, tickets will be sold at the Clubhouse front desk until sold out. Looking ahead to November, our show will be Four By Four. After an incredible show a few years ago, the Board is delighted that "The Four Boys Are Back!" With wonderful harmonies and fantastic, non- stop choreography, enjoy hits by these famous groups - The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, and Motown. OHSPA always thanks our Star Donors for their support. We're very happy that our Pre-Show Champagne Reception for our Star Donors was so well-received. We are excited to confirm that we will continue this Reception prior to all our shows this year. With the help of our Star Donor donations, OHSPA is able to contract with professional performers and bring high caliber shows to our community. We also thank the OHCC staff and the OHCC Audio Visual Committee because without their help we could not conduct these shows that all of us can enjoy! So OHCC, how can you beat a "theater-quality" show within two miles of your home and free parking, all at a cost of only $30? We hope you will join us for these action-packed musical shows.
