| OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2024 | 29 Art Lovers It was a very rainy, blustery day when a group of Art Lovers carpooled to Del Mar Fairgrounds for the Beyond Van Gogh immersive experience. Those who have seen it have marveled at the feeling of being engulfed in more than 300 of Vincent Van Gogh's paintings and of the amazing technology that created this unique visual experience. Walls and floors are wrapped in light, color, and shapes that swirl, dance and refocus into flowers, cafes and landscapes. The sights of blossoms opening then floating across the sky, sparkling starry nights and water shimmering toward you create a thrilling palette of vibrant colors. Through the use of cutting-edge projection technology, Beyond Van Gogh breathes new life into Van Gogh's artworks. With four trillion content pixels, one sees the finest details of Van Gogh's works in unprecedented clarity, as if painted before your eyes. You feel as though you are walking right into Vincent's bedroom, into the villages and rivers and enfolded into a star-filled sky. The artist painted Starry night from his window of an asylum to which he was committed. Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch Post-impressionist painter and is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. He created approximately 2,100 artworks including many self-portraits because he couldn't afford to pay a model. As he looked at himself in a mirror his face is mostly turned to one side with his haunting eyes staring at the viewer. The paintings depict him as aging rapidly. Even as a child, Vincent was disturbed with mood changes and violent temper. His madness continued when he cut off part of his ear after a violet argument with his fellow painter Paul Gauguin. He committed suicide at the age of 37 by shooting himself in the chest. Van Gogh tends to be remembered for the darkness of life when his work is filled with bright colors and joy in spite of his madness, poverty and struggles. He didn't mix his paints and used a palette knife to get those familiar large strokes. Only one of his paintings was known to have been sold during his lifetime. We are looking forward to our visit to Beyond Monet at the same venue as well as several other trips.
