| OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2024 | 33 Philanthropy is a large part of what the Sewing, etc. group does with their time. In addition to the many items we donate to Camp Pendleton and San Pasqual Academy, there is another interesting connection as a result of our free/donations table located in the Sewing Room. When fabric, yarn and supplies are donated, they are organized and gleaned (if necessary). Not all items donated are readily used in our crafts and projects, so we need to find a source that can make use of them. We have been fortunate to establish a relationship with Carlsbad High School's Career Technical Education program (better known as CTE), and its Fashion Design teacher, Elena Chirkova. In addition, Elena has affiliations with local community theaters, so our proceeds are not only used in her classes but are made available for costuming for various stage productions. So – your donations are not only serving OHCC crafters, they are also helping students and our community! Thank you! We have a lot of classes (free to members) in April. Fri., April 5 is the first of four Beginning Quilting classes, followed by the second of those on Fri., April 12. Thurs., April 18 we will be making a thread catcher for your crafting area, great for paper and fabric scraps as well. Fri., April 19 brings the third Beginning Quilting class; Sat., April 20 is a class on how to make a T-shirt "bloom;" and Sat., April 26 is the fourth and final class in beginning quilting… a very busy month. Basic sewing skills and machine operating skills are required for the quilting classes. Sign-up sheets are available in the Sewing Room. Our regular get-togethers remain in place as always. Our Kneedlers (knitters) and Hookers (crocheters) gather on Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 pm and are always looking for excuses to practice their knitting and crocheting, and to offer guidance. Also, on Tuesday evenings (6 to 8 pm) and Fridays (12 to 3 pm) several quilters, knitters, crocheters and sewers get together for Sew & Chats. Both of these gatherings are loosely structured and help to keep us in touch. We meet monthly on the first Thursday in the Mykonos Room at 9:30 am (social time begins at 9:15 am), and if you're a member or just checking us out, please feel free to join us! Don't forget about our ride-share service to meetings and workshops that are held in our Clubhouse. If you are interested in attending and have no transportation, please call Sharon Philippe (760) 500-3086. We have a list of volunteers who will be happy to get you to and from the event. If you are interested in participating in our activities and are not sure who to reach out to for further information, please call MaryLu Belisle (952) 454-1931 for more information.
