42 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2024 | In February, the Billiard Club provided our four introductory Basic Lessons and a Professional Seminar. If you missed any of these or want to review the material, you can find them on our OHCC website under Social Clubs – Billiards – Recorded Lessons. Our Basic Lessons 1-4 are available in PDF format for those who prefer written instructions. If you prefer videos, simply click on "Charlie's YouTube Videos 2-7." (Note: Video #1 covered terminology, which is better explained in written PDF Lesson #1.) Our pool professional, Calvin Coker, has been teaching here for over 10 years. Is he really a pro? You bet — his high run at straight pool is 258 balls! Here he is last month, winning an 8-ball game while using an antique 8 ½ foot snooker cue. By the way, Calvin is also a professional singer. He has been featured in many musical productions, Summer Stock shows, Civic Light Operas and National Tours. He was also a principal singer in Las Vegas' longest-running show, "Jubilee!" Here's a shot of him back in the day in Vegas. This time Calvin gave six private lessons to eager students and then explained ALL the fundamentals to 40 members in his famous seminar for beginning pool players, conducted right here in our Billiard Room. You'll find a video of a previous version of that seminar in the same place as our Basic Lessons: "Charlie's YouTube Videos 2-7." After that, click on "Billiard Videos You Will Enjoy" on the same web page to see many other interesting billiards videos. Go ahead, spend a few enjoyable hours on something that will pay dividends for years to come. Written by: Charlie Payne Billiards Golf Club Our spring golf tournaments kicked off on Sat., Feb. 17 with the much-anticipated season of Guys and Dolls. Let's review the numerous big money winners of that tourney. Closest to the Pin honchos were Suchiko Okada and Bob Bechill. Magic Circle magicians were Barry Whitson, Tony Gillett, Helen Sloan, and Natalie Sentz. The tournament committee was very generous in paying out for six flights. Flight number one winners were Gloria Whitson, Fred Peppe, Doug Wright, and Kathy Hunt. Flight two were Dan and Suchiko Okada and Bev and Tony Gillett. Flight three were Mike and Sandy Ackerman and Sandy Chamberlin. Flight four were David Hyde, Deneen LeRoy, Bill Crosby and Betsy Crane. Flight five medalists were David and Maria Lopez, Gary Forsberg and Ellouise Morse. And last, and certainly not least, were Peggy and Cliff Singh and Tex and Karen Burke. Way to go everyone! Larry Mcbride said that only two men in the hole in one pool had aces the last couple months: Rich Dameron and Dan Okada. Remember to put in a dollar to the pool envelope. You too could be a lucky winner or more likely a sucker. If you were not included in the hole in one recognition, let me know. Coming up over the next few months are more of our much- anticipated Touring Amateur and Guys and Dolls Tournaments. Place the dates on your refrigerator golf calendars. Touring Amateurs will be taking place on Mon., April 18 at Oaks North; Mon. May 16 at Welks Fountain Course; and Mon., June 20 at St Marks Long Course. Guys and Dolls will continue on Sat., April 27, May 25, and June 22. Let's hope for some dry and sunny weather for these tourneys. The photos above reveal three guys trying to steal a few bucks out of the hole in one envelope and three lovely ladies ready to tee off on the Niners tournament. Happy fairways everyone!
