44 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2024 | Member Spotlight: Meet club member Kathy Barbier, a second generation OHCC resident. Her parents were among the first residents of OHCC and lived here for 30 years. During that time, Kathy visited frequently. She had spent 60 years in the hot San Fernando Valley and after her parents' passing, she and wife Mary Lou Maneff moved to the more temperate climate of OHCC. Kathy and Mary Lou met at a NOW meeting, where Mary Lou was president of the largest NOW chapter in California. They celebrated their 40th anniversary last year. Kathy was born in Indiana. On a cold and snowy Jan. 1, her family was watching the Rose Bowl on TV and her mother said, "What are we doing here?" They packed up and moved to southern California. As an adult, Kathy worked for the LA Times and was the first female in the production department. When the newspaper began installing phones and computers, she moved on to the electronics department. Despite receiving lots of grief from male colleagues, Kathy says this was her favorite job of all. Kathy has always loved being in the water. She says that water gives off negative ions which make you feel better and claims "I feel mentally happier when I leave the pool." Kathy strives to be at the pool seven days a week, where she swims laps for about 30 minutes. Can you see why her sister always called her "the fish?" In addition to the Swim & Wellness Club, Kathy belongs to the Woodchucks, Pet Lovers, and Theatre Arts. She also supports the Journalism Club. Some of her other pastimes include reading, and taking sunset photos which she makes into cards. Get ready for our 2024 Swim Clinic! If you are interested in improving strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, and overall body conditioning, then you may want to consider attending an aerobics class to see if it fits your needs. This is an all standing low impact class… NO JUMPING! The instructor leads each class in a warm up session followed by the aerobic portion, and then she does a cool down. Light weights are used for the last 10 minutes of the class. Occasionally there are a few exercises for balance and an easy dance for fun. Classes are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in Abravanel Hall from 10 to 11 am with instructor Christine Alesiani. You can choose the number of classes each week that you would like to attend. (There is no class available on the second Wednesday of each month.) The cost is $5 per class paid directly to the instructor. You may pay for and try two classes without joining the club. The annual club dues are $6 (please make the check payable to OH Aerobics). ~ Written by Margie Raisigel Aerobics 2024 Swim & Wellness Club Meetings Wed., June 12th at 11 am - Summer Lunch Social Wed., Sept. 11 at 1:30 pm - Oral Health in our Senior Years-Let's Talk Teeth!
