Our book for April is e Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama.
e author is the daughter of a Chinese mother and a Japanese
father. Setting her story on the eve of World War II, she uses
the Japanese invasion of China as the somber backdrop for
the compelling adventure of a 20-year-old Chinese student
and painter named Stephen, who, while recuperating from
tuberculosis, is sent to his family's summer home in a coastal
village of Japan. ere, under the care of Matus, the housekeeper
and a master gardener, Stephen learns of a beautiful, generous
and nurturing way of life.
It's a story with a detailed setting and a most interesting mix
of characters, and it is one that is sure to stir your imagination.
