From Colony Cousins member Greg Griffes: An Ancestor Who Stole from the Rich and Gave to the Poor. In my list of direct ancestors is David de Etherington of Dunkeld (c. 1144 – 17 June 1219), who was a Scottish prince and Earl of Huntingdon. He was a claimant to the Scottish throne and many historians believe that David is the true inspiration for the Robin Hood legend because the legend plays at the same time as David lived in the 1190s. Another similarity is the Earl of Huntingdon title because a historian names Robin Hood as a possible Earl of that area. Also, both had taken part in the Third Crusade and by 1194 David had taken part in the siege of Nottingham Castle where the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derby County was taken captive. And you won't have a chance to read it until after the concert. I hope you attended the concert, and I hope you enjoyed it. Now for something about the future. This is a great time to consider joining the chorus. Practice for the next concert begins on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 9 am in the Auditorium. What does it takes to join? It's simple – show up. I can promise you some benefits. Many of us know that music is a great tool for keeping our brains sharp. But it can get better. Compared to listening to recorded music, scientists have learned attending LIVE music events is even more effective at keeping the brain sharp. And that can get better. To help keep our brain sharp, making music is even more effective than listening. So, for the sake of your brain, come and join us. You'll enjoy singing, you'll make friends and you'll have fun. See you in September, the 5th at 9 am to be exact. Enjoy the summer, and sing whenever you get a chance. "Robin Hood" David de Etherington of Dunkeld (Scotland) It's springtime, and what better way to kick off the season than to stay strong and fit. Our Fitness Center is the perfect place to do just that. Cardiovascular health is extremely important for a healthy senior lifestyle, and the good news is that we have the equipment for this, from various cardiovascular machines to treadmills and elliptical machines to stationary bikes. We also have a cable station that is ideal for core strengthening and muscle workouts. For those of you looking for a more aggressive workout, we have multiple heavy weight-bearing machines that target specific muscle groups. If you would like heavier workouts for muscle conditioning, we have a new assortment of dumbbells that can accommodate all fitness levels. You also won't want to overlook our most recent additions — the Power Plate machine and the fitness stretch cage. Both of them are becoming increasingly popular among our residents. I am pleased that many residents with special needs are using our fitness center more frequently and on a regular basis. This is a good sign for individual health awareness and progress. With rare exception, I plan to be on hand in our center every Tuesday from 10 am to 4 pm. I am committed to helping any of you who would like assistance in using our equipment. Sign up with our Clubhouse receptionist Cindy Irving, or call her at (951) 677-4341 to book a free appointment with me. See you at the gym! Colony Fitness Center By Cece Gordon
