| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | MAY 2024 | 15 How's this for a GIANT blooming introduction to spring?! Also known as orchid cactus, Epiphyllum is a genus of flowering epiphytes, native to Central and South America, growing on trees as air plants. Epi cacti, or "epi" for short is a semi- desert hybrid known for its brightly colored flowering large petals. In North America they are often grown as houseplants indoors like you would an orchid. However, this beauty is thriving quite well outside in the courtyard of Hortencia and Juergen Roesler. Thank you, Hortencia for snapping a pic of this beauty and sharing it with everyone. April was jam-packed with exciting, fun activities. Beginning with a visit to the garden of Club Member Mary Swinney, we all enjoyed roaming through her 'come to life' Fairy Garden; complete with a separate Gnome Garden. With imaginations in over gear, we then embarked on our journey south to The Gardeners Cottage in Temecula, enjoying lunch prior to returning home. On April 24 we all came together again at another member's home, Terry Makeig, for a hands-on workshop on building our fairy gardens using succulents. In between these two excursions, on April 17 we learned all there is to know about responsible recycling at the CR&R Recycle site in Perris. Lunch was entertaining, gazing out the windows at all the jumpers coming in for a safe landing at Skydive Perris. May's meeting will be held in the Arts & Crafts Room on Mon., May 13 at 1 pm. Continued discussion for spring excursions will be the highlight. With so much rain and not enough sun, the superblooms are a bit behind in dazzling us with their brilliance so I am confident we will get one of these trips scheduled. Watch for eBlasts through May as we plan our itinerary. All Four Seasons residents are welcome to attend meetings and trips. Sharing gardening tips, traveling together, learning from each other, and cultivating forever friendships are the blooms growing in our gardens. Usually Late Bloomers meets every second Monday of the month at 1 pm in the Arts & Crafts Room, unless we meet off-site for unique excursions.
