| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2024 | 15 Sun Lakes Committee Reports Lifestyles Magazine is the resource most residents turn to in order to find out what's going on in our community. At 80 pages, it includes pictures from residents plus articles from the Master Board, Delegate Assembly, FirstService, the Restaurant, the golf pro, and all the advisory committees. Clubs and groups send articles and photos about their activities to Sunlakesnews@yahoo.com by the 6th of each month. The LAC meets on the seventh of each month, unless otherwise specified, to review and edit the articles submitted for each month's issue of the magazine. We meet with a Master Board liaison, Assistant General Manager Jason Ewals, and the Recreation Director Manager to keep updated about events coming up in our community. We also publish want ads and for-sale items from residents at no cost and hide a monthly joke for residents to find. Responses to our "Get the Joke" contest are put in a hat and a winner is randomly drawn, earning a restaurant gift card as a prize. Photographs taken by residents of areas within Sun Lakes are used on the magazine cover. If you're good at proofreading and are interested in joining us, please fill out a volunteer application form that you can get in the Main Clubhouse lobby. We keep all applications and will contact you as soon as there is an opening. Lifestyles Advisory To quote a famous poem, with a few little tweaks, "I hope that I shall never see a Sun Lakes home without a tree." For those homeowners who do not have a tree in their front yard, you will be receiving a notice from our Planning and Compliance department informing you that each home is required to have a tree. Each lot must have a minimum of one 15-gallon, or greater, tree with a maximum of four trees. The 15-gallon tree must be at least five feet in height, with a main trunk at least three inches in circumference when planted. Other front yard trees, when planted, may be smaller. The variety of tree you pick is not controlled. When choosing a tree try to envision what it will look like when it is mature, so it does not dominate the front landscape in an inappropriate manner or encroach on the neighbor's property. The front yard area is the area that is dominantly visible from the street. When planting the required tree in the front yard, be aware that side yards and/or planters that are secluded and located significantly back from the street will not be considered an area for the required tree. The tree must be maintained to allow sufficient lighting to the street or sidewalk below. Tree material is not permitted to overhang any portion of street lights. A three- to five-foot clearance of the tree is recommended as a guideline, however a larger set back may be required depending upon the type of tree, location, or density. Trees may not be located where it would prevent the maintenance or painting of the house, fence, wall, or other modifications. And, lastly, for those of you who have mature trees, it's okay to remove the tree stakes. ~ Lyla Wolden, member Master Architectural Committee Member Master Architectural Marketing Advisory A TRUTH THAT NEEDS NO EXPLANATION Think about it. We get back what we give. What we support and nourish will thrive. What we ignore and neglect will fail (except weeds). A recent social media post by a Sun Lakes resident caught our attention: "We went to the Restaurant last night and the food and service were fabulous … unfortunately there were only a few others there. I'm concerned that we'll have to close our Restaurants if this trend continues." The Restaurant & Lounge are now closed, but for good reason. Over the next several months, we will be using the Sandwedge Bar & Grill while the Lounge expansion is underway. Most of us (over 84 percent according to a recent survey) are looking forward to a new Bar & Lounge with over twice the capacity. Regular and new Lounge-goers will enjoy this significant upgrade, while those who are looking at our financial ROI can anticipate a measurable increase in profits. Remember, this expansion will not impact your HOA fees, as all costs will come from the Capital Improvement Fund and Reserves. The majority of our residents tell us that the Restaurant, Lounge, and Sandwedge factored into their decision to move here and are vital Sun Lakes amenities. Let's all do our part in assuring that the Food and Beverage amenities thrive and continue to serve our need for good, reasonably-priced food and drink that's only a short cart ride away.
