| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2024 | 13 We talk about what we need to have in our home in the event of a natural disaster or emergency but just as important is preparing our homes. Earthquakes — big, medium, or small — are inevitable and could topple the furniture in our homes. So how do we keep this from happening? Here are some suggestions. There are many types of furniture anchors or fasteners. Some are very elaborate, and some are very simple. But the most important aspect of the anchors or fastener IS TO USE THEM! Securing your wall unit, bookshelf, dresser, TV, or any piece of furniture, that has the potential of moving or falling over, during an earthquake, is a critical part of disaster preparedness. Most anchors and/or fasteners kits are usually two brackets, a strap or cable and some screws. These products are sold at your local hardware store, big-box retailers, and online retailers. Generally, they are easy to install but may require two people, depending on the restraint and the piece of furniture you are securing. How Do You Anchor a Piece of Furniture? Step 1: Locate a stud behind where you want to place the furniture and drill a pilot hole. Step 2: Mark the wall and secure the bracket to the wall. Step 3: Line up the furniture with the wall bracket and mark where to secure the bracket to the furniture. Install the bracket. Step 4: Using the strap or cable included in your kit, tether the furniture to the wall. For more information and how-to videos, you can search online.
