16 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2024 | Pedestrian safety continues to be an issue here at Sun Lakes. Despite the presence of clearly marked pedestrian gates for residents at all entering and exiting locations, it is concerning to note how many pedestrian residents choose to circumvent these safety measures by using vehicle entry and exit points instead of the designated walkways and gates. This is a safety issue for all of us. We don't want any unfortunate accidents to occur because of this. Securitas has taken proactive steps to intervene and educate individuals caught engaging in this unsafe practice. If you need a key for the gates you can contact administration and they will issue you one. The newly-installed security fencing just past the main entrance at Gate #1 will serve to direct pedestrians to the pedestrian gate there. The Safety Advisory Committee will discuss a recommendation to keep this pedestrian gate open during the day at our next meeting. Securitas reports that there has been an increase in dog-on-dog attacks in Sun Lakes. These incidents are primarily attributed to dog owners not adhering to leash regulations. Dogs in any common area must be on a leash. Animal control of Riverside County and Banning PD are both limited in their ability to respond to incidents. We must rely on efforts of community members to adhere to Sun Lakes rules and regulations for pet ownership. Please keep your dogs leashed when you are walking them. The Safety Advisory Committee will be making recommendations for some additional speed limit signs in certain areas. We are still seeing many drivers not making full stops at stop signs. Please observe speed limits and stop at stop signs – for everyone's safety. Another safety issue is placing trash cans on sidewalks. On Tuesdays, place your trash cans in the street, next to the curb. When they are placed on the sidewalk, they create a hazard for walkers. Be considerate and be mindful of others' safety. If you see something, say something. If you see any suspicious activity, call the Banning Police Department, followed up by a call to Securitas, our security company. Keep your garage doors closed unless you are working in your garage. Stay safe and enjoy every day in this beautiful community. Safety Advisory Sun Lakes Committee Reports
