48 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2024 | We are pleased to announce the expansion of the Veterans of Sun Lakes CC. Our organization is now listed on the roster of Clubs on the Sun Lakes website which includes our Mission Statement, bylaws, and application. We are open to any Sun Laker who supports our military and wishes to be involved with our incredible group. Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom from 9 to 11 am. There are no dues. The first Tuesday of each month includes a Board Meeting which involves an optional breakfast menu service, also beginning at 9 am in the Sandwedge Bar & Grill. All are welcome to attend whether or not you are interested in serving on the Board. Our Founder Emeritus is Bob Schive, United States Navy. Our new Executive Director is Will Baker, United States Marine Corps. Ron Kington, United States Army remains as Key Advisor as well as Diana Smith, United States Navy, along with Beverly Reneau as our Veterans Benefits Specialist. Gloria Pena serves as a Board member and leads our "Also Served" Committee, many of whom sacrificed during their spouses/families military times and we recognize and salute their contributions to the safety and welfare of our country. We also have several Gold Star Families in Sun Lakes and we will be reaching out to them in honor of their loved ones as well. We begin each meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and reading/recognition of our POW/ MIA partners. Our organization is now represented by an expanded Executive Committee/Board of Directors which includes members from each branch of the service. Our Branch Representatives serve as the first point of contact for those under their branch. The U.S. Army contingency is led by Chris Gonzales, who has the largest number of members within our organization. A four-tour Gulf War Veteran, Chris will be an integral part of the growth here in Sun Lakes. The U.S. Air Force is led by Ed Luna, who will also be overseeing the new United States Space Force members as they develop. We look forward to guest speakers from this new and exciting world of technology. Don Stairs, U.S. Marine Corps, will ensure smooth operations. Don is a Vietnam Veteran and brings a strong background to us. Our April speaker from the Cal Vet Office spoke on benefits and programs. Results will be reported in the June Lifestyles. The expansion of our organization, which now includes more than 100 members, will also include new Committee Chairs in areas such as Mentorships for which Tony Peters, U.S. Navy, will be leading, plus numerous other areas requiring Volunteers, such as Sponsorships, Public Affairs, Social Activities, etc., all of which will be formed and announced in the June Lifestyles. We have secured our spot in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom on the second Tuesday of the month for next year, 2025, and look forward to continued service and growth as we build our tradition within this wonderful world of Sun Lakes Country Club.
