18 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | JUNE 2024 By Clare Mendez, Resident I was recently taking a walk around our community and was pleasantly surprised regarding the amount of homes flying our American Flag. "It is not only a beautiful sight to see, it also shows our love of our country." e flag was adopted a little more than a year aer the Declaration of Independence was signed. e Second Continental Congress passed a resolution that "the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be represented by thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation." When flying your flag constantly, it should be illuminated at night. If it is hanging opposite your only carriage light on the garage, perhaps consider planting a solar light in the ground below it to shine at night. If possible, it should also be taken down during inclement weather and it should not touch the ground, and if it becomes tatty you should replace it. e Department of Defense says you can either burn your flag or bury it in a dignified manor (ceremoniously and with a moment of silence), or you can bring your tattered flag to the American Legion, VFWs, and Girl Scouts or Scouting America for retirement. Flying the American Flag LISTEN - CARE - SHARE Submitted by Linda Weiss, Resident Combat medic Desmond Doss ran into desperately dangerous conditions to rescue 75 injured men during the Battle of Okinawa. His unflinching kindness to those suffering earned him e Medal of Honor – the only one awarded to a conscientious objector. e film Hacksaw Ridge was made about his life and his example demonstrates why personal convictions are no barrier to extraordinary acts of kindness. "You cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late." Ralph Waldo Emerson DESMOND DOSS – A PACIFIST WHO WENT TO WAR
