26 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2024 This has been another challenging winter with all the rain keeping us from being able to use the Corral as much as we all would like, but better weather is on the way. If you have been to the Corral in the last couple of months, you have seen the major ruts that have been created by all the rain eroding the decomposed granite (DG) on both sides of the Corral. Never fear, help has arrived. By the time you receive this month's Breeze, both sides of the Corral will have been graded with ruts removed and additional DG applied to make it safe for both humans and our dog companions. A member shared with the committee the following information from their insurance company regarding liability insurance coverage in the event of a dog bite that we thought was worth sharing with the community. If you're a dog owner or plan to be, are you aware of your liability for an injury from a dog bite or attack? Homeowners' and renters' insurance policies typically cover dog bite liability. However, if the claim exceeds the limits of the policy, the dog owner is responsible for all damages above that amount, including legal expenses. A single lawsuit — even if you win — can end up costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ultimately, the owner has responsibility for properly training and controlling a dog. Here are some tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help reduce the chances of a dog bite or attack: • Consult with a professional (e.g., veterinarian or responsible breeder) to learn about suitable breeds for your household. • Spend time with a dog before buying or adopting it and use caution if you have an infant or toddler in the family. • Socialize your dog so that it knows how to act with other people and animals. If you own a dog or are considering one, please review your policy to decide if you need additional liability coverage. The Canine Corral Committee is still looking for additional members to join us. Even if you are not currently a dog owner, but love dogs and their well-being, and are willing to donate some time, we would love to have your fresh ideas for the Corral's growth. So please consider coming to our meetings which are held on the first Thursday of each month at 10 am in the RCN Conference Room. Meetings are always posted in the Daily Report. ~ Lynn Jahnke, lynnj92223@gmail.com Canine Corral
