FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2024 61 Whether weather is good or bad, hot or cold, wet or dry, some folks just gotta play tennis; despite the gray day in their golden years, the intrepid band of Chicako Ferguson, Gloria Gall, and Liliana Simanton bundled up and played on. International Tennis Federation Rule: if the ball splashes, play a let. Under more pleasant conditions, the Tennis Club held its annual meeting and dinner in The Courts Multipurpose Room. Planning and arrangements were aptly managed by Lou Stokes, Activities Coordinator. Club President Stan Lam gave his state-of-the-club presentation sharing the plans for the coming year, including quarterly tournaments, such as the recent Poker-is-a-Racket event, weekly drills and coaching, monthly play days, and more. He remembered Howard Lyon, an original member of the Club committee, who recently passed away. Also an original member of the committee, and fortunately still with us and in attendance, was Loren DuChesne. Loren recounted the early days of the Club when the two courts were at The Lodge and pickleball was still a baby gherkin; of course, now it's a big dill (groan). Treasurer Chuck Beckman gave a report on the Club's finances, including income from dues and from the bottle recycling project managed by Alex Castanon. After dinner there were a few tennis trivia questions about rules and interesting (?) facts, such as the fastest recorded serve (163.4 mph by a man and 136.7 mph by a woman). The evening wrapped up with several drawing prizes and the usual cleaning-the-place-up chore. The First Annual Racket/Paddle Battle produced winners in pickleball, paddle tennis, and tennis, as well as an overall winning pair (Stan Lam and Julie Stayner/Bev Haller). In a playoff tennis match between the Group 1 and Group 2 tennis winners, the gold-colored plastic medal went to Larry Martin, FSBTC superhero "Racketman," and his deferential sidekick, Hugo Forrit (birth name Steve Hovey) who defeated Syed Ali and Hailu Kinte in a 10-point tiebreaker. Playdays will continue to be scheduled for the last Saturday of each month, and tennis drills and coaching will occur on the other Saturdays. Everyone is welcome.
