28 | THE COLONY NEWS | JUNE 2024 | The Colony Cousins Genealogy Club welcomes you to our Tuesday, June 11, meeting at 1 pm in the Annex where we will have a business meeting and a luncheon sponsored by the club. Please join us and hear about the club's plans for this year. Our meeting will start promptly at 1 pm, so please plan to sign in at 12:45 pm. For questions, please contact Lennie Martin at (503) 269-9987 or lenniem07@yahoo.com. Our new member drive continues, and we invite you to join us. Dues for 2024 are $25 for an individual and $30 for a family. Contact Greg Griffes at mosesscrolls@gmail.com for a membership form. Did you know that you can find the origin of your name for free at Ancestry.com (https://www. ancestry.com/learn/facts)? From their records, I discovered: my Griffes surname is derived from the Welsh name Griffith; see how the Griffes families moved geographically; learn that the occupation of most Griffes were laborers and teachers (I guess there are no riches to be found in my family!); and that in 1991, the average Griffes lifespan was almost 100 years old. Check it out; it's fascinating, as Mr. Spock would say. Genealogy By Greg Griffes, 951-383-9988 Colony Chorus By Ken Luekens Our Spring Concert has come and gone. It was great fun and I hope you did not miss it. Several people have said it was the best concert yet. The live band on stage was probably the reason. It was all Beatles music and the whole Chorus had fun singing, with the audience often singing along. Both concerts were sellouts. A BIG thank you for all the support! Moving on, the Chorus Board has started working on music for the Christmas concert. It is not too early to save the dates – Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7 pm and Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 pm. We have a theme picked out and a few songs selected, but that will remain top secret for a few months. Remember, as mentioned in the May edition of e Colony News, now is a great time to consider joining the Colony Chorus. To do that, just show up at Chorus practice. Practices are mostly held on Thursday mornings from 9 to 11:30 am. The next practice is Thursday, Sept. 5. No audition is necessary. Join us. You'll enjoy singing, you'll make friends and you'll have fun. See you in September (Sept. 5 at 9 am to be exact). Enjoy the summer, and sing whenever you get a chance.
