| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2024 | 9 "Your Safety – Your Responsibility" is a familiar refrain from SERT, and it holds particular significance as we age. While our physical conditions evolve, do our habits and surroundings adapt accordingly? During a recent visit to a resident who now relies on a cane or walker for balance, I noticed a throw rug near their front door, which posed a hazard by catching on their mobility aid. Furthermore, their enthusiastic dog added another layer of complexity by maneuvering between their legs, eager to greet visitors. Later, during a walk, the person struggled as the dog's leash repeatedly tangled around their cane. ese incidents underscore the prevalence of trip hazards in everyday life. While our homes should be sanctuaries of safety, every year, accident, and emergency units deal with serious injuries and even fatalities resulting from incidents within the home. Falls, in particular, stand out as the leading cause of home accidents, accounting for a third of all fatalities. e elderly endure the most of these accidents, facing not only the risk of death but also the potential for severe injuries such as broken bones or fractured hips, which can significantly impede healing and quality of life. To mitigate these risks and ensure a safer living environment, consider the following tips: • Staircases: Ensure adequate lighting and maintain sturdy handrails and steps. For individuals with limited mobility, installing stairlis or relocating to a single-level dwelling can reduce the risk of falls. • Bathrooms: Install stabilizer rails near toilets and in showers to prevent slips on wet surfaces. Consider modifying shower entries for easier access. • Furniture: Secure furniture to prevent sliding and ensure unobstructed access for emergency responders. • Flooring: Secure throw rugs to prevent slippage and remove any potential trip hazards posed by pet toys or other objects. Taking proactive steps to address these hazards can significantly enhance your overall well-being and safety. Remember, "Your Safety – Your Responsibility!"
