| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2024 | 45 Racquet Club Lori Smith and Sue Bourland study early OHCC history signage Men's Pickleball finalists assemble for well- deserved applause Tournament season is upon us with men's pickleball kicking off the first tournament of the year in April. ere were 17 teams who vied for bragging rights over 3 1/2 hours of competition on a delightful rain- free day. Spirits were high with well over 100 spectators lining the Pavilion Courts for the finals play. In the Intermediate division, Rob Ganz and David Bourland prevailed over Jay Rudman and Van Rhonheimer for the gold. Top dogs in the Advanced division, Allen Wilson and David Stein defeated Fred Fieri and Brian Spector to earn their crowns. Our tournament success is a direct result of the many volunteers who plan and run this major event. Karena Abrams, Joyce Baker, and Alinda Giansiracusa co-chaired, overseeing an enthusiastic cadre of worker bees who homed in on the logistics from set-up to clean-up and all the steps in between. e culminating social and awards presentations featured Jersey Mike's subs and the usual bit of "if only we'd done this or that" commiserating between partners who finished out of the money. But there were no losers, and a good time was had by all. Next up is the Women's Tournament on urs., June 6. Competition runs from 9 am to 12:30 pm, followed by the finals, and then a social to celebrate. Check the Racquet Club website or the court bulletin boards for more details. Spectators are most welcome! e Racquet Club's participation in the 40th anniversary tribute to OHCC had its roots in the treasure trove of historical documents that president Bob James' parents – original owners Mary Lou and Jess James – had stashed away for years in their Adra home. Bob created a dozen "yard signs" highlighting prominent figures and fascinating nuggets about the early days in the community and strung them along the croquet lawn during May's Pickleball Play & Stay. Club members also staged demonstrations of badminton, paddle tennis, and pickleball for those attending. Play & Stay hosts Marisa and David Stein went all in with a "Star Wars" vibe for the social part of the monthly gathering and their snacks, decorations, music, and hospitality were greatly enjoyed and appreciated. Summer's coming, and we're looking forward to pickleball instruction for players of all levels (free for beginners!), Summer Chill concert II on the Lanai July 28, monthly Play & Stays, and cornhole too!
