26 | OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2024 | Because I am writing this before our concert took place and because of our history from a few concerts ago, I am only assuming that it took place. If so, I hope you all enjoyed it. An awful lot of work went into it and hopefully, it showed. e best part of the concerts is the audience and just so you know, you are appreciated. If you missed the concert, our Holiday Concert will be coming up in December on the 8th at 2 pm. If you haven't been to one of our concerts in the past, give us a try. You may be amazed at the level of talent in our chorus. We are always looking for new members whether you sing or not. ere are a lot of opportunities to help the group both musically and non-musically. e last couple of years the Choral Society has sponsored summer concerts. e chorus does not perform at these concerts but rather, we have outside talent performing. By popular demand, Michael Munson is returning for this year's summer concert on July 6th. He is an extremely gied performer and has been our accompanist for the last few choral concerts and performed here a few years ago as part of the Summer Concert series. You will really enjoy his musical talents so please plan to attend. e Chorus will be taking the summer off and will start rehearsing again in September to prepare for the Holiday Concert. I hope to see you there, either at rehearsal if you would like to join the Choral Society or, at the concert itself if you choose to sit in Abravanel Hall and enjoy wonderful holiday music. Written by Jack Shabel Choral Society Toxic Plants For Dogs A few years ago, one of our residents, Shannon Johnson, told Ellen that she had been reading about the dangers of the firestick plant - also called the pencil bush-and has removed one from her yard. e sap is very poisonous and causes skin irritation and eye problems, sometimes including great pain and several days of blindness. One of her sewing club friends was telling her about her problems with the dog's eyes as well as welts on the belly. Shannon mentioned the plant and it turns out that the neighbor had one in her yard and the dog may have rubbed against it. e "firestick" plant (or pencil bush) is found among other euphorbias in many gardens around our village. If these striking plants are part of your landscape, you should consider confining them to areas where your dog's cannot touch them and be aware that the sap on your gardening gloves can be transmitted to your dog and your face.
