30 | LIFE IN SOLERA | JUNE 2024 | Cool Summer RV Campgrounds So, it's too hot you say for some summertime camping. Well, we found some great RV campgrounds all within a day's drive of our community. Check out these campgrounds for some last minute camping ideas. 1. Cachuma Lake (805-686-5055) is located off of Hwy 154 in nearby Santa Barbara County. Lake Cachuma offers over 100 full hook-up camping sites. Fishermen and women will love the fishing. Pontoon boats can be rented to get out on the lake. Nearby Solvang is perfect for an afternoon outing. Amenities include a general store, gas station, coin operated laundromat and hot showers. 2. Mission Bay RV Resort (858-270-4300) is a RV Group favorite. Located on San Diego's Mission Bay, you have just about every amenity you need. Big Rig friendly with full hook-ups, Wi-Fi and cable. There is a pool, spa and clubhouse. This is the perfect basecamp to explore everything that San Diego has to offer. There are bike trails and a public beach. This is a prime beach front RV resort. 3. Flying Flags RV Park (805-888-0158) at Avila Beach on the Central Coast. Wake up to cool ocean views and raging sunsets. Dog and grandkid friendly. Wi-Fi, cable and full hook-ups complete the camping experience. Check out the Central Coast Aquarium. 4. Huntington Beach RV Campground (714-536-5281) in Orange County offers oceanfront camping with full hook-ups. This is a very popular campground, so make reservations months in advance. There are plenty of beach activities. Learn how to surf, or start up a beach volleyball game. Stroll the beach and do some beach combing. Dine at some of the fine local restaurants that are nearby. 5. Jalama Beach Campground (805-568-2460). My personal favorite. Tucked away between Lompoc and Highway 1, you take a turn onto Jalama Road. The road to the campground is 14.5 miles long and is a little steep and winding. Most RVs should have no problem navigating the road. Big rigs should however use caution and maybe consider other nearby RV parks. Once you set up camp, head over to the camp store/grill and order yourself a world famous Jalama burger. You can thank me later. There are a mix of full hook up and non-hook up RV sites. Non hook-up camp sites are literally feet away from the beach. The beach is long, beautiful and natural. Time has not changed too much at Jalama Beach. There is a playground for the kids. The fog does come in during the morning and evening. If you're lucky, you might see a missile launch from Vandenberg AFB, my former base when I was in the Air Force. 6. Dockweiler RV Park (310-322-4951). The gem of Los Angeles County. This is Los Angeles County's only recreational vehicle campground on the beach. Just get on the 105 freeway from the 605 freeway and head west and take it to its end. At the foot of LAX, you'll find year-round beach camping with full hook-ups. You're going to hear aircraft noise, but it's easy to ignore when you're having so much fun. Bring your beach cruisers and cruise the Strand. RV size limit is 40 feet.
