We meet each month on the first Monday from 1 to 3 pm in the Main Clubhouse Bus Room and the third Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. "It might seem unnecessary to insist that, in order to say something well, you must have something to say, but it's no joke. Much bad writing, mathematical and otherwise, is caused by a violation of that first principle." – Paul Halmos I had the great pleasure to have Professor Halmos as my teacher for honors freshman calculus at the University of Michigan. Professor Halmos wrote several classic texts in mathematics. He is also famous for many quotes. In the above quote, notice that he is making a key point that applies to all forms of writing. Indeed, in an essay, the premise drives the argument and conclusion. In a novel, the story board drives the setting, character development, plot development, conflict and resolution. This also applies to poetry. The sonnet follows a rigid structure over 14 lines, with a turn in meaning after the first 8 lines (octave) into the last 6 lines (sestet). In songwriting, an idea for a subject (love, epic story, protest) drives the mood, rhythm and style (rock, folk, blues), which in turn define the melody. Our Creative Writers Club has several experienced writers in many forms of literature. Come join us at Creative Writing Club meetings to share your ideas in a friendly setting, and listen to the writings and opinions of others. You will find this very stimulating. 36 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2024 | Creative Writers Computer Club We are dark in June, July, and August.
