40 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2024 | Karaoke Group Chorale The Chorale of Sun Lakes presented its 36th Annual Spring Concert Series last month. It was the culmination of an intense season of rehearsals and sectional practices from January to May. Consisting of more than 50 members, the Chorale is taking a well- deserved hiatus for the summer and looks forward to meeting new members at its summer picnic on Aug. 15 in the South Clubhouse. Practice for its 37th Holiday Season starts up again on Mon., Sept. 8. The Chorale is open to membership for any Sun Lakes resident. The Chorale has five sections: Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, Basses, and Baritones. Practice sessions are held on Mondays from 9:30 am to 12:15 pm. Prior to each concert, additional practices for individual sections are held. Sheet music and learning materials are furnished to help even the novice enjoy the experience. You can sing in this men's chorus or enjoy a quartet experience with three other guys. Along the way there were also ladies who rocked just as hard as their male counterparts although without much fanfare. Sister Rosetta arpe played electric guitar, sang in a Delta blues style, and her best-known song called Rock Me. Willie Mae ornton (aka Big Mama ornton) was the first to record the song Hound Dog in 1952. Elvis had his recording of this song on the charts in 1956. Big Maybelle was the first to record Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On in 1955. Ruth Brown sold so many R&B records for Atlantic Records the owners of the company called their label e House at Ruth Built. La Vern Baker was the second woman inducted into e Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (aer Aretha Franklin) and is known for the song Jim Dandy. Wanda Jackson is known as e Queen of Rockabilly. Wanda rocked hard. She also dated Elvis and sang the Elvis song Let's Have A Party. Lillian Briggs called herself e Queen of Rock & Roll. Janis Martin, e Female Elvis Presley, is best remembered for the songs My Boy Elvis and Drugstore Rock & Roll. Brenda Lee's real name is Brenda Mae Trapley and is nicknamed "Little Miss Dynamite." Brenda rocked hard in her early days and is best known for her hit recording of Rockin' Around e Christmas Tree. ere have been many other ladies of Rock & Roll from Tina Turner to Taylor Swi. Whatever style of music you enjoy, you can be sure you'll find it when you join Barb Miller, Rosie Ingalls and me, D.J. Blast, for this month's Goodtimes Karaoke on Fri., June 28 in the South Clubhouse beginning from 5:30 to 6 pm, depending on the availability of the room.
