12 | LIFE IN SOLERA | JULY 2024 |
By Cindy Bice
Our Fourth of July, aka Independence Day, marks the historic
date in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was
approved by the Continental Congress. The written declaration
stated that the American colonies were tired of being ruled by
Great Britain.
This day also reminds us of the sacrifices and courage all
men and women took to free our country from the Britishers.
To thank all soldiers from the past, serving proudly today, and
those who safeguard the values we cherish. That living in the
here and now, we are privileged to dream of new opportunities
and endless possibilities.
The Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and the U.S. Flag — no
matter her name, the pride she invokes can be overwhelming.
To see the beauty, and know the history brings honor and pride
as she waves gracefully over all of America. The 13 stripes for
the original colonies, our 50 states represented by the stars, the
red for valor and hardiness, the white for purity and innocence,
and the blue to represent vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
This is our American Flag.
Here in Solera, we have our very own Flag Brigade. This
special group of men work tirelessly to display the Flags 13
times to commemorate special days during the year in Solera.
The Flags are raised at sunrise and lowered before sunset on
these dates (weather permitting).
The Flag Brigade has a roster of seven volunteers, still serving
their country and our community.
A big shout out to the Solera Flag Brigade: Wayne Otte,
George Vawter, Jack Clark, Ron Selberg, Stuart Osborne, Mark
Hardy, and Nick Gercis.
