| THE COLONY NEWS | JULY 2024 | 31 John Knitter, our friend and coach, has left The Colony tennis courts, but not without a proper celebration! There were 72 people who attended his going-away party on the patio. Joey Santiago put the party together, with help from Jeanne Bender, Denise Godknect and Heidi Schumaker. Joey and Dick Castle prepared and grilled all the food, which was delicious. Music was provided by our own Kevin Petka, aka "Dr. P." Meanwhile, in a small town in Kentucky, John is starting a tennis group; can you believe that? In a shocking turn of events, the Paddle Tennis Tournament did NOT get rained out in June! After a fun round-robin format, the winners emerged, and they were Laurie Freres and Tom McClure. Nice playing, you two! Thanks to Sharon Smith for hosting the breakfast table, and as always, our tournament hosts were Ellen Micheli, Herb Reynolds and Pat Kight. The June club dinner was a fiesta style meal on the patio. Our hostess was Linda Kight, with help from Pat Kight, Carol Alda, Harriet Henderson and Karen Nichols. A beautiful evening, delicious food cooked on site, and Racquet Club friends to enjoy it all with — the perfect combination for a wonderful time! For more information about tennis, call Jeanne Bender at 949-295-5412 or Karen Nichols at 619-550-8194 for paddle tennis. Good day pickleball enthusiasts! I wanted to thank everyone who participated in our monthly tournament. We had 24 folks having the time of their lives and five back- ups hoping to get in the mix. Unfortunately, or fortunately, all 24 players showed up. That's a good reminder to sign up early. As the weather gets warmer, we will start playing a tad earlier. It's really never a problem as each group of 12 only plays for an hour or so. Moving forward, if we have 36 players sign up, we can simply have three rounds of 12. I would like to welcome all the new players who have joined the club. If you or anyone else would like to run some drills in the late afternoon, please feel free to give me a shout. I'd be more than happy to oblige. I hope to see you all on the courts, and as always, there are no reservations required. Just come on down and join in the fun. We are a very welcoming group!
