| THE COLONY NEWS | JULY 2024 | 33 Men's Golf By Greg Griffes In May, we played one of our major tournaments, The Club Championship, which is three rounds of individual play using USGA handicaps. The winners are now in the books and were: Mike Basel – Low Gross at 238 A Flight: Rich Brown – Low Net 1st place at 215; Pat Anderson -- Low Net 2nd place at 217 B Flight: Jim Gillespie – Low Net 1st place at 220 (tie breaker: hole 16); Mel Rich – Low Net 2nd place at 220 We are pleased to announce this year's four winners of the High School Scholarship program, who were two students from Murrieta Vista High School and two students from Murrieta Valley High School: Jessie Ham, Jada Golovich, Jacob Aylward and Amanda Aylward. These young, fine folks will be playing with us on June 19, just two weeks after the Pancake Breakfast, which raised money for the scholarships. The Men's Club is looking for Colony resident golfers of all abilities to join us. Membership benefits are weekly fun events, mixed with individual events to improve your game and handicap. We have monthly luncheons, two major championships a year, and a year-end Awards Banquet. We also sponsor the charity Pancake Breakfasts twice a year. For several months, Mother Nature's rain has forced the cancellation of our afternoon Nine- Hole event. This month, we had no rain and temperatures at tee time (4 pm) began in the high 80s and hadn't dropped many degrees at tournament's end. It was a pleasure to have 30 golfers for the two-hour event. If you have an interest, give me a call or drop me an email at dmurph44@vrizon.net and I will send you a 2024 tournament schedule (first Thursday afternoon of the month), rules of the game and include you in our active mailing list. Our contest set for July will be canceled since the first Thursday, July 4, is the national holiday. Thus our next event is not until August 1. All that's needed to participate are to be able to grasp a club! Being a member of the Men's or Women's Golf Club is not required.
