| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2024 | 61 Table Tennis/Ping Pong In this issue, we take pride in putting the spotlight on stalwart Howard Jackson. Howard and late wife Peggy were original members and instrumental in starting the SLCC Table Tennis group more than two decades ago. Howard was born in Columbia, Missouri, 94 years ago! He moved to California when he was a teenager (who didn't like California as a teenager!?). He graduated from USC with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked on many important projects in the aerospace industry. Howard and Peggy always enjoyed the game and the company of fellow "ping-pongers." Howard played golf for many years and won more than a few trophies. He has played Bocce Ball for 25 years. Some days you can find him in the gym working out. One of the best highlights of his Sun Lakes career occurred in August, 2021, at the age of 91, playing doubles with partner James Xu. They won the Silver Medal at the inaugural Sun Lakes Summer Games competition (coinciding with the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan). The shot of the month is a pirouette shot that never should have been called a legitimate shot. It was pure luck that this happened one day this month when a player demonstrated this balletic move to the shock and consternation of the other team. It was where the player whirled around and did a backwards slop shot, perfectly executed. Never happened again. Unfortunately the camera didn't catch it, so there is always the next time that we may see a shot never seen before. Sometimes that little white ball has a mind of its own. We usually play Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 4 to 6 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 12 noon, but it is best to check the SLCC website for updated schedule changes, because sometimes we get bumped due to other community activities. Hard copies of the schedule are available on game days in the Ballroom. In a new innovation (thanks to Hernan for this), the current Table Tennis schedule can be brought up on the touchscreen monitor in the lobby of the Main Clubhouse.
