FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2024 61 "Bite me," is not the way you want to speak to the mosquitoes that are out in force with the warm weather and pleasant evenings. Just as happened last year, the copious amounts of rain we had this winter have fostered a banner season for the flying pests that pester us in the mornings and evenings on the courts. While our local vector-control folks are not likely to come to our defense with aerial spraying, there are a few things that we can do that may help keep them from sticking their noses in our business. Wearing light-colored clothes will make us less attractive to mosquitoes, so white, green, pink, beige, light blue are better than black, navy blue, red, orange, and floral patterns. Also, because mosquitoes will bite through clothes, loose-fitting attire are better than tight ones such as leggings and yoga pants. Mosquitos are also attracted to sweat, heat, and carbon dioxide, so don't sweat or exhale. Our May Play Day on Memorial Day weekend was a four-court success with 16 players coming out for the morning's play and free donuts. We welcomed new club members Tracy and Robert Mahan out for their first Play Day. It was also nice to have J.V. Vallejo participating again. In addition to playing our own matches, in July we will be watching the professional men and women as they compete in The Wimbledon Championships, which have been held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England since 1877. Perhaps we can add croquet at The Courts, but the Ladies Putter Group may not want wickets on the putting green. At Wimbledon there are many traditions, hoity-toity pretentions, and the prospect of having British royalty in the stands, so top-rated men players such a number one Sinner, along with Ruud and Wild may not be crowd favorites. Morning-group coordinator Paul Seigman informed members that the start time for those weekday matches is 8 am during the summer months. Sign-up sheets for the morning and evening play are available on the club website. Play Days will continue to be scheduled for the last Saturday of each month, and tennis drills and coaching will occur on the other Saturdays. Everyone is welcome.
