California was the 31st state in the Union and a star was added for the admission on Sept. 9, 1850, when Congress passed the California Statehood Act. At that time there was no standard for arranging the state stars in the blue field of the National Standard. A version (likely sewn in the new state) depicts the west coast version with the center star being California. Seven years later, Minnesota became the 32nd state with their star centered. ~ Len Tavernetti, ltavernetti@hotmail.com We celebrated Cinco De Mayo in style. Divas entered the festively-decorated room, wearing colorful f lowers on their heads and Mexican attire. The tables were covered with red tablecloths and colorful serapes. On top were mini sombreros, piƱatas, fans, and maracas. Music filled the room with mariachis and Mexican dancers performing traditional songs. Our luncheon was Mexican cuisine. Appetizers included salads, salsas, guacamole and chips. Entrees were enchiladas, tamales, chile rellenos, carnitas, all accompanied by beans and rice. Desserts were f lan, cake, bunuelos, and pan dulce. Beverages were sodas, margaritas, and coffee. After our delicious lunch, it was time for the games. Some Divas played Cornhole where small fabric bags are thrown toward a slanted, raised board and the goal is for the bag to go into the hole. Another game was "Pin the tail on the Burro." Before trying to pin the tail, you had to dance a few seconds with Lydia, Lady Cha Cha Champagne. She then blindfolded you and led you in the right direction. Another game was Mexican Bingo. Played similar to bingo but instead of cards with numbers, the board and cards have Mexican illustrations with names on them. When someone wins they shout, Loteria! It means lottery. Our day was filled with good friends, good food, and fun entertainment. It was a true fiesta. ~ Irma Romero, (626) 733- 3019, Irmabsromero@gmail.com 48 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2024 Crown Divas Four Seasons FS Veterans Park Garden Club As of this writing, the Garden Club Steering Committee will be meeting soon to plan for next year.
