18 18 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | JULY 2024 | | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | JULY 2024 | Happy Independence Day, America! Living in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave truly is a privilege, as well as a blessing. So too is living in our wonderful community of Four Seasons! Quilters Cleta Colston and sister, Diane Best remind us of these commemorative blessings with these beautiful quilts. As we gather early this month to celebrate our independence, let us also remember another 'seamstress' who put her mark on history after the victory won in the American Revolutionary War of 1776, declaring our Independence. Hired by a group of Founding Fathers 248 years ago to make a new flag, George Washington, Robert Morris, and relative George Ross visited Betsy Ross, a seamstress and upholsterer and discussed the need for a new flag. In June of 1776, Betsy accepted the job to manufacture the flag, altering the committee's design by replacing the six-pointed stars with five-pointed stars. Thirteen in all, representing the original 13 colonies, the white stars were arranged in a circle against a blue canton in the upper left corner. Also representing the colonies are 13 alternating red-and-and-white stripes, sewn horizontally across the flag, both conformant to the Flag Act of 1777. Named after Betsy Ross, this first flag for George Washington was noted in a paper presented to the Historical Society in 1870. William J. Canby, Ross' grandson dates the historic episode based on Washington's journey to Philadelphia in late spring 1776, a year before Congress passed the Flag Act of 1777. This month marks the 2024 So Cal Quilters Run, Shoot for the Stars Shop Hop on July 11-14 and July 18-21 and includes 16 quilt shop participants. Visit www.quiltersrun.com for more details.
