50 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2024 TOPS The Italian American Club Steering Committee has decided to take the summer off. Many of our club members will be traveling during July and August so it is anticipated that the attendance of these meetings will continue to be low. Please put Sept. 12 at 6 pm on your calendar and watch for emails for additional information. In the meantime, if you have an idea for a program for our club, please let Barbara Dipoma, Jerry Monahan or Anita Vasquez know. The Italian American Club consists of residents of all backgrounds and open to all residents of Four Seasons. You do not have to be Italian to join our group or come to our meetings. We would like you to come and visit with us. Please stay safe during the summer. ~ Barbara Dipoma, (805) 377-2616, and Jerry Monahan, (951) 212-8898 Italian American Club TOPS, Take Off Pounds Sensibly, has been very busy, despite the heat wave. One important challenge we did this month is the Water Challenge. Different sources tell us that we must drink more water to avoid heat stroke, but we must also stay hydrated to have a healthy body. Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, result in mood change, cause the body to overheat, and lead to constipation and kidney stones. Water has no calories so it can also help with managing body weight and reducing calories when substituted for drinks with calories such as sweet tea or regular soda. We were reminded to clean our water bottles as bacteria can grow in our personal bottles. White vinegar, a bit of baking soda with water should fill the container and sit overnight. Then rinse and air- dry before use. The chapter was given a water tracker to record water ounces for each day. Our other challenge for the month is to reduce our screen time, TV, phones etc. We were encouraged to make a tech-free zone in our house, and to give ourselves an environment of serenity for a short time each day. Lastly, we discovered lentils that can be good for dips, soups or salads. Several varieties include brown, red, and yellow. Specialty stores will also carry beluga lentils and French lentils. Lentils are one-quarter protein and are full of B vitamins, etc. You may find that a group like TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) can help you as well. We meet on Tuesday at 8:30 am in the Ballroom.
