26 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2024 The heat is on in So Cal. Accordingly, our weekend group play times now begin at 7 am. If you have multiple dogs, during group play times, each owner can bring in only one dog at a time. If no other dogs are in the Corral, you can bring in more than one dog at a time to allow them to run free with "their pack." You can also set up play times with others at your convenience. The Corral is open from dawn to dusk. All dogs enjoy the freedom of just running or playing ball. Please take advantage of the safe space offered in the Corral but remember to bring water for your pet. Membership is $40 the first year and $30 per year after that. Proof of all shots and neutering are required. You can pick up an application in The Lodge. Visit our website: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CanineCorral While on my morning walks with my dog Reyna, several people have stopped to ask why the Association is paying for the ground repairs in the Canine Corral. It is true, we are self-funded. All the improvements within the Corrals (shade structures, benches, entry pavers, and play equipment) have been paid for by us. The heavy rains this spring did extensive damage to the ground surface, leaving many deep ruts which were a tripping hazard for people and pets. Since the area itself is common ground in the Association, the members of the Board of Directors decided to complete the erosion repairs. ~ Martha Franck, Co-Chairman, (714) 345-8588, marthafranck826@gmail.com Canine Corral Landscape Committee As I write this, the heat is soaring every day to difficult temps. We've been to the pool and try to stay indoors in air conditioning, but what about our yards? The general consensus seems to emphasize several ideas: • Water early. Get outside and irrigate your lawn and garden before the temperatures reach their peak. • Apply mulch. Excessive heat dehydrates your landscape more quickly. • Hand water as needed — but do it deeply, in the early morning or after dark. • Keep grass on your lawn higher than usual. • Add shade cloth, especially if you grow tomatoes … they quit blossoming in high heat. • Give your plants extra water. High temperatures will require more watering because there is an increase in the rate the water that's lost from the plant's leaves. • Skip fertilizing. • Avoid pruning. • Provide temporary shade and mulch, mulch, mulch. Hopefully, the high temps will go down soon and we can relax and enjoy summer but until then, take care of yourself and loved ones and your landscaping. ~ Kathryn Hughes, kathryn.hughes@ fsresidential.com
