A Glimpse into the African American Cultural Club The events organized by the African American Cultural Club (AACC) revolve around our motto of "Sharing Black Culture with Everyone." Our Black History Month program, Juneteenth celebration, Jazz Under the Stars, our Christmas Gala, and Kwanzaa program signify our commitment to meeting this goal. The AACC hosted its first annual Juneteenth Unity Walk on Wednesday, June 19, with more than 60 attendees. The walk began at The Summit, with participants walking the two-mile loop around Four Seasons Circle. This symbolic route represented the two and a half years it took for the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach the slaves in Galveston, Texas. During the walk, some participants accompanied the walkers while driving their cars, golf carts, and scooters. Following the walk, attendees relaxed at The Summit, enjoying snacks, fruit, and mimosas, making it an enjoyable and memorable experience. This year's Juneteenth Celebration took place on Saturday, June 22. The festivities kicked off with watermelon appetizers and music. The event featured videos and speeches enlightening attendees about the origins and significance of Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday, shedding light on the efforts of 97-year-old Opal Lee, who advocated for three decades to establish Juneteenth as a national holiday. The caterers knocked it out of the park with the soul food! Every bite was a revelation of f lavor. If you missed any of our events, do not fret! We have more celebrations to come this year. First up is Jazz Under the Stars, a free event on Saturday, Oct. 5. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own snacks and beverages. Tables and chairs will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 4 pm. Our fabulous Christmas Gala will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14. Tickets go on sale in September, so keep an eye out. Finally, mark your calendars for our Black History Month program in February 2025. We will have a blast while learning about our past! The next AACC meeting is on Monday, Aug. 5 in The Lodge Game Room. There will be no club meeting in September due to Labor Day.
