FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2024 61 Winners, whiners, wayward wieners – what a wonderful way to wave bye to June. We had a great turn out for our Play Day and BBQ, with 20 players rotating courts and changing partners every 20 minutes, sort of like speed dating, but without benefits. Well, the donuts and coffee that Brian Flowers, Play Day coordinator, provided count as a benefit. The Play Day format is designed to bring club members and other tennis playing residents together once a month to play with and against players of all skill levels without pressure to win. Which is not to say that some folks just can't help themselves from their competitiveness. For example, there's Linus Asoff, who seems to think that the white lines are just recommendations, and Wyatt Cauldout, who has never acknowledged that he just may have hit it long. On the other hand, there's Oliver DePlace, who can be counted on to run after and get to everything hit his way. (Names are fictitious to protect the guilty.) When the tennis playing ended, it was time to barbecue, with Larry Zimmerman and Stan Lam (real names) handling the grill duties for the hamburgers and hot dogs. Well, mostly they handled it. There was the wayward wiener that plopped on the ground where it sat until snatched up and re- turned to the grill. The rescue dog showed true grit, sort of a Gruff the Grime dog. No worries, mustard fixes everything. Players and spouses provided tasty side dishes and desserts to make for an enjoyable end to the June Play Day. Our pickleball playing friends have returned to the resurfaced courts by The Lodge, as have the paddle tennis players. The resurfaced tennis courts are expected (as of press deadline time) to open on Aug. 3. Of course, August is one of our hottest months, so when we all get back out to our courts, we need to be cautious and prepared for the heat. Did you know that an ounce or two of pickle juice can stop cramps 40 percent faster than water? Playdays will continue to be scheduled for the last Saturday of each month – sign-ups at 8 am, and tennis drills and coaching will begin at 8:30 am on the other summer Saturdays. Everyone is welcome.
