| THE COLONY NEWS | AUGUST 2024 | 35 It seems like the juggernaut that is pickleball just keeps on growing. Several of us headed down to City Hall to attend a meeting regarding the construction of new pickleball courts around Murrieta. It turns out the city was allocated $400,000 to build them by December. We explained how we would like them built, i.e., things such as the proper distance between the courts, benches outside of the courts, shade structures, restrooms, windscreens, etc. They were very receptive and have continued a dialog via email. Here in The Colony, the number of players continues to grow. Last month, we had another fun tournament with 24 participants. Everyone had a ball, and the gang contributed lots of great snacks. Soon we might need to utilize the new city courts. That is, until we can find some room to build another court or two right here at home. Wishful thinking. It cools off nicely in the late afternoon, so the players have games going in the morning and throughout the evening. Come on down, grab a paddle and join in the fun. Instructions as to how to play the game are available at no charge. And, as always, no reservations are necessary. Pickleball By Scott Ross, 310-213-3362 Recently I had the opportunity to visit the bridge group and take pictures at their luncheon. What a wonderful group of people! Since I know nothing about the game of bridge, I decided to look up the definition, and let me tell you, I couldn't even understand that! This is a most interesting, challenging, absolute cognitive workout that provides so much opportunity for social interaction. According to Google, "Many players say that hours after a bridge game, they still feel mentally alert and energized, similar to the 'high' that long-distance runners experience after a race. Bridge is one of the few games that stimulates both the left and right sides of your brain." Pat Repic told me, "We welcome all players, even new ones. We have people to teach you!" She went on to say, "I love bridge. You have to think, and it's great for people to use their brains." Cheryl Lange and Ron Balaban both love the people who play. Ron also loves that he gets to be with his honey, Phyllis Penn. Bob Hefferle says, "Bridge keeps your mind and memory sharp." As they gathered after lunch to start the actual games, I wandered around and chatted up each table of players. I was fascinated with all the items they use. The only thing I actually recognized was the deck of cards. So, I asked Charlie Nathan if it was a special deck, and did they use the jokers. His answer has to be my closing line: "No, it's just a usual 52-card deck and there are no jokers… well, except for the players!" Bridge games are offered Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons, and they are looking for new members. Lessons are available. Both ladies and gentlemen are welcome. For information on who to call for each specific bridge group, see the Activity Calendars each month in e Colony News magazine. They hope to see you there!
