By Michele Walter We had a great turnout for the presentation by District Attorney, Mike Hestrin and Maureen DuMouchel, Deputy District Attorney. Maureen gave many scenarios of the different types of scams and frauds that are occurring all over the country and in Riverside County. I cannot stress enough the importance of being vigilant on Elder Fraud. No one is exempt from being a potential target of a scammer. If you did not have a chance to participate in this presentation, please watch it on Channel 97. PROTECT YOURSELF FROM COMMON FRAUDS AND SCAMS! • Limit the amount of personal information on hand when in public. • Deposit mail directly at the post office and shred all correspondence with financial information. • Do NOT provide any personal or financial information over the phone, email, or text. • Use caller ID to screen your phone calls; if you don't recognize the number don't answer it, friends and family will leave a message. • Never provide any callers with your credit card number, bank account, or social security. • Do NOT talk to or do business with a stranger over the phone, at your door, or on the street. • Get at least three written bids before contracting for home improvement. • Consult with an attorney to discuss advance directives/estate planning/POA. • No matter how much you know, love, or trust someone, NEVER sign documents that you have not read or do not understand. • Always monitor your financial accounts and be aware of where your credit cards are and who has access to those items. • Remember what your mother told you: "DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS!" If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
