Special guest, Eric Bishop, chair of Mira Costa's Theatre and Film Department, will conduct an acting class on Aug. 14 at 1 pm in the Majorca Room. Please direct all questions to Anita Simons (ASimonSays@gmail.com). Special contributor, Valerie Thompson, tells us why is she a Theatre Arts member: After retiring from teaching, my husband, Gene, and I decided to change our lives and discovered Ocean Hills! We immediately fell in love and moved in on Labor Day, 2001. We joined the couples' tap class and then Theater Dance class. We enjoyed performing and were comfortable on stage. In August, 2010, Gene suddenly passed away. I knew I would continue in dance, but felt the need for something new—a fresh start. I decided to try acting classes, was cast in a production of various scenes, and was hooked! I liked acting, fun and friendly people, and the challenges presented in the Theatre Arts' Club. Since then, I have worked with several directors. I learned from each of them and from the many talented actors with whom I have worked (my favorite being the role of "Ouiser" in Sweet Magnolias). Membership allows me to enjoy the many varied and wonderful acts the Club brings in. It has given me broader perspectives, wonderful experiences, a great host of new friends and many new skills, most of which translate into daily life. Joining this club was one of the best choices I have made. It has brought me much joy and satisfaction. We will share an encore performance by singer, Michael Ruhl, Aug. 5. Adrienne Nims and Spirit Wind, will return to entertain us on Oct. 7 for a wonderful evening of songs, music and laughter celebrating OKTOBERFEST! These events are open to the community (free to members of Theatre Arts and $10 for non-members). We're always looking for good entertainment. If you know of someone whom you think the community would appreciate, please contact Lisa Malec (lmalec@envdev.com). Our next regular Board meeting will be Aug. 21 at 11 am and is open to all Theatre Arts members. For $15, you can join Theatre Arts and participate in a year's worth of entertainment, activities and membership privileges. Make your check payable to "OH Theatre Arts" and bring it to the front desk (include your name, address, email, and phone number on the check).
