| OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2024 | 35 I love taking photos of signs. They (frequently) make me laugh, but sometimes they are initially perplexing. The sign showing an adult and child with a line through them was taken in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Does it mean this is a no kid zone? Upon ref lection, it shows that you've reached the end of the pedestrianized zone ("cona" is an approximate cognate for "zone"), and Slovenia gets a great many visitors, few of whom speak Slovenian or one of its cousins, so the picture helps. The sign "No Swearing or Blaspheming" was photographed in a pub in Sligo, Ireland. My observation was that the first part was violated within 30 seconds of our arrival, and the second took a minute or two longer, so posting this sign might have been an example of typically ironic Irish humor. Finally, the sign "Do not touch caterpillars, cocoons, butterf lies" was illustrated by a photo of someone doing exactly that, but with a line through the photo. I guess the line made it okay. This was taken outside the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. I'm thinking about asking our members to take photos of signs, or collect photos of signs they've already taken, and see if we can come up with a unique slide show for one of our meetings. For an upcoming meeting I'd like us to share some of our knowledge about smartphones. The iPhone is absolutely jammed with features, many of them highly useful for photography; but the darn phones don't come with a manual (it would be outdated by the next iOS update anyway) so these features are not well known to occasional photographers. We'll call it "iPhone A to Z" and if we're lucky we'll get past 'B' for Backup; and you know who you are who never back up your phones. If there's anyone who has expertise who'd like to help out, it'd be appreciated. We're also looking at an off-site photo shoot at Alta Vista Gardens in Vista, not far from the Moonlight Amphitheater. We'll try to figure out a good day for us to car-pool and go over there. They do have a $5/person admission fee. It might be in lieu of our September meeting, but I hate to go three months without one. Stay tuned. Remember – no general meeting in August. ~ Jim McDonough, jamespmcdonough@gmail.com, 760- 593-9994 Photography
