August, e Last Hurrah Of Summer "August hangs at the very top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris Wheel where it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy Spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of Autumn." ~ Natalie Babbit August is known for strength and protection. It is the month for love, marriage, and inner ref lections of self. It is a month of transition into a lighter, more positive side of self. Perhaps for those of us here at OHCC, one of the most important days in August is National Book Lovers Day on Aug. 9. It is that very love of books that inf luenced the original plan to provide a library that would become an asset for all of its residents to enjoy. As we pass through the doors of our library today, many of us may not be aware of how it was conceived and brought to life. Over the past four decades our library has been enhanced and improved. It began in 1984 when a St. Louis firm was hired to decorate all Clubhouse rooms. The library cabinets were thought to have come from a French Apothecary shop. Resident Dale Springer created practical spaces for books and supplies from these original cabinets. Volunteers organized a Holiday Boutique to raise money to pay for the transformation. This was also the beginning of a community outreach program of volunteers that would take care of our library for decades. In 1985, residents began to form social groups that utilized residents' talents, skills and interests. Frances Collier started a group called SEEK, a group that organized book reviews and current event talks. It became the nucleus of The Library Association that we have now. Throughout the next few months, we will be bringing you some other historical facts about the development of our library. Stay tuned. Speaking of books, a fascinating autobiography of entertainer, Barbra Streisand, was just purchased as one of the books from the July list for our library. Although a long read, it will not disappoint you. "From a difficult childhood to glittering career, this is an astonishing success story." - The Guardian "Like Barbra herself, frank, funny, opinionated, and charming. No entertainer's memoir has been more anticipated." - Goodreads We leave you with one final thought on August: And that feeling' never faded like the tan lines on your skin. I' d do June, July, and August a thousand times again. Can it be summer forever? Does love get any better than those three months together? - Ryan Hurd Written by Sally Benton and submitted by the Library Association | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2024 | 13 Library Association AUGUST BOOK BUYS 2054 ................
