Doo Wop and Disco dancers will gather in the new Lanai for Hot Time in the Summertime on Fri., Aug. 16, with refreshing ocean breezes wafting through the Lanai cooling down the late summer heat. Doors open at 6 pm and the music starts at 6:30 pm. We will also be in the Lanai for the event in September. Following the wishes of most members in a recent survey, all parties this year are BYOE (Bring Your Own Everything). Coffee, tea and water will be provided. There is an opening for a party host in November. Please contact Lorraine Novellino if you can volunteer then or for any of next year's dances. The job involves assembling a committee, choosing a theme, selecting and arranging the decorations and staffing the registration table. Dates of dances for the rest of the year are Sept. 27, host Jeannie Merrill; Oct. 27, host Karla Sando, band Smokin' Guns; and Nov. 23, host open, band The Buckleys. With ranges in ages from 55 to over 80, our members are a diverse group with differing musical tastes. Some look back with fond memories to the mid-50s when Doo Wop hit the charts, while others weren't even born then and prefer disco, hip hop, rock and roll and possibly even rap. Your Board tries to achieve a happy medium, offering a bit of everything in selecting the band/DJ and the choice of music. We realize not everyone is going to be pleased, but we hope most are. Janet Mrvos and I vet all the bands and work with them on musical selections. If you have heard a local band that you like that has not performed for our group yet, please just let us know. We are always looking for new talent. Speaking of new talent: In the fall, there will be positions open on the Board of Directors for 2025. If you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee or running for the Board, please let me know. Remember, it is only through volunteers that the Club exists and that dances are held throughout the year. So if you enjoy the dances and events, please pitch in wherever you can – as a party host, a committee member helping the host or as a Board member. Written by Tom Harwood | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2024 | 15 Village Squares Red, White, And Blue was seen everywhere as the Village Squares celebrated the Fourth of July at our July 3 tribute to Independence Day. Our dancers really know how to celebrate — with colorful attire, themed decorations, and an abundance of food, both sweet and savory. We danced to many patriotic songs, as our caller, Mike Haworth, was well-prepared for the occasion. Our students are now doing extremely well and able to spend the evening just enjoying the dancing. We owe our experienced dancers a big thank you for all their help. We also give a shoutout to Steve Ward for teaching the practice class on Tuesday afternoons, and to those who come to help, and to the students who come to get that extra practice before Wednesday night. It takes a village to keep the Village Squares operational. We will continue our Wednesday evening classes, bringing our students into the plus level and mixing instruction with lots of dancing!
