| OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2024 | 43 Summer sailing is underway! The club has had 49 sails through the end of June. During June, there were sails to Rady Shell and to Glorietta Bay, among other "themed" sails. The Glorietta Bay sail was participated in by three boats, all of which upon reaching the destination, were lashed together with the lead boat setting anchor. Lunch and beverages were enjoyed by all; and one couple even managed to take a swim off the stern of one of the boats. So far, the club has another 27 sails scheduled for July and August. Hats off to the club's Fleet Captain and all the Captains and Mates who made this happen for us. Training Coordinator Dave Ramgren's mate candidate training program is moving ahead with great success. Two of the Candidates in Training – Stephanie Hewitt and Susan Fishman – have graduated to First Mate status and will be on boats as First Mates working with our captains during the remainder of the year. Other Candidates in Training continue to work hard and will be participating in additional scheduled training sails with our Fleet Captain, Charlie Cappello, and the club's Training Coordinator, Dave Ramgren. Everyone can look forward to hearing about more training program graduates. The Captains and Mates are continuing to plan the club Regatta scheduled for September. There are now six boats planned to participate, and thanks to Harrison Miller and his team, all the boats will be f lying the Ocean Hills Sailing Club burgee (pennant). Our social director, Laura Carlson, along with her team continues planning for the Fall "Speakeasy" gala. I hope our members are all practicing their Charleston dance steps and getting their 1920s attire ready. We now boast 280 club members as of the end of June. We may reach 300 by the time the gala rolls around! May all our Sailing Club members and our Ocean Hills Country Club neighbors and friends enjoy fair winds and following seas. Maniscalco Sailing Club Walkers & Hikers Club The Walkers & Hikers Club continues to grow, with new members joining every month; but we really want to see more members out there on our walks or hikes. It is a great way to meet people, engage in interesting conversations, burn some calories, and enjoy Mother Nature. Perhaps some people are staying away during the summer months due to the heat. We are trying to combat that by going Coastal! For the next couple of months, we have scheduled hikes or walks near the coast or walks that provide a good amount of shade. For example, on May 30, we offered what is becoming one of our popular, stand-by walks at nearby Buena Vista Park, which, in addition to being a beautiful walk with rock formations and lush greenery, much of the walk is very shady. If that were not enough, it is only a mile away from our back gate! In June, some hikers braved a couple of hot and dusty, but fun and challenging hikes in Elfin Forest and Martha's Grove. On July 12, walkers did a loop around Rancho Penasquitos Adobe. Also, in July or August, hikers will be going to Torrey Pines. A walk at the beach in Carlsbad is also scheduled. Another way to beat the heat is to have a walk/hike significantly later in the day. Marla Reiter is scheduled an intermediate walk/very easy hike to the San Clemente pier on July 21. If you know of a walk or hike that you would like to see happen, we encourage you to suggest it and even lead it! All OHCC Walkers & Hikers members are welcome to lead hikes. Written by Marla Reiter
