| OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2024 | 45 Racquet Club Summer was surely slow to show up at the courts this year, but our daily court usage has now shifted as it usually does at this point in the calendar to heavier use earlier and later in the day and not so much when the sun is at its peak. For some, those open courts are perfect for spending 30 minutes or so drilling with the ball machines or using the hitting boards. And there are always the diehards who enjoy exercising regardless of the temperature. Good for them! The June Women's Pickleball Tournament was a wonderful success with 16 teams mixing it up in competitive and entertaining matches. But when time came for "center court" finals, it was Jean Boston and Debbie Machnick coming from behind to overtake Alinda Giansiracusa and Julie Pashkowsky in the High Intermediate finals and the Diane Bednarski – Allison Womack duo exhibiting unbeatable partnership play to take 1st place Advanced honors over Patricia Dellow and Lois Green. Most heartening — hands down – was the effort of the two Low Intermediate teams — Jackie Cameron and Jenny Campa, along with Lois Russell and Tracy Wilson — who played their hearts out. Tournament Directors Pete Cannon and Fred Savage, and Social Chair Martha Cannon, oversaw the large team of enthusiastic volunteers who made sure every detail of the day went smoothly! Racquet Club's social calendar gathers steam over the next several months. Play & Stays held the first Saturday morning of each month emphasize mixed-level drop-in pickleball, cornhole on the lawn, and a hospitality pop-up featuring a juice bar and goodies hosted most recently by Donna and Rob Ryan. Our July Summer Chill concert on the Lanai and two more member-only special events (Sept. 7 and Oct. 17) serve to maximize opportunities for socializing off the courts as well. September's "month of cornhole" weekly competition will be here before you know it. Did we mention lessons? Felicity Swerdlow and Harvey Bernstein are helping expand the range of lessons available here "on campus" by bringing in professional pickleball coaches. It's just getting started, so offerings are limited in the early stages; yet so many of the players who got their pickleball start under the guidance of resident volunteers, Herb & Gerry Livsey and Mike Hoggatt, are telling us they're ready to take on new challenges. More to come! Free introductory pickleball and padde tennis lessons for OHCC residents are a Club staple – just contact our Help Desk. Website - ohccracquetclub.org; Help Desk - ohrchelp@gmail.com. Our pickleball mascot, Piccadilly High Intermediate finalists: Julie, Alinda, Debbie & Jean take center court Advanced Finalists: Fierce competitors Patricia, Lois, Allison, & Diane face off Donna and Rob Ryan welcomed a large July Play & Stay crowd
